The more I think about the hard financial times of this coming year, the more optimistic I get. We've just come out of a long period of self-delusion, a time when money seemed to have no real value at all. If you've been wondering where it all went, the answer is simple -- it was never there in the first place. It was theoretical, imaginary money that existed on paper, but nowhere else. When merchant banks could lend up to 50 times what they held in assets, then that money was based on nothing more than faith. With faith in the system now gone, so has the money.
